Chapter 3

Custom Instructions

This is where the magic happens. "Program" ChatGPT to behave exactly how you want by giving it persistent context and rules that apply to every conversation.

Templates

Copy and paste these into your ChatGPT settings (Settings > Personalization > Custom Instructions).

Field 1: What would you like ChatGPT to know?

I am a busy professional who values accuracy and brevity. I have a background in [Your Field]. I use ChatGPT for drafting emails, analyzing data, and strategic planning.

Field 2: How would you like ChatGPT to respond?

Be direct and concise. Avoid filler words, robotic transitions, and unnecessary apologies. Use professional formatting (bullet points, bold text for key insights). Do not use emojis. If you don't know the answer, state that clearly instead of guessing.

Best Practices

Be Specific

Don't just say "be professional." Say "avoid slang, use bullet points, and keep paragraphs under 3 sentences."

Define a Persona

Tell it to act as a specific role (e.g., "Senior Marketing Manager" or "Python Expert").

List Negatives

Explicitly state what NOT to do (e.g., "Never apologize," "Don't use emojis," "No moral lectures").

Iterate

Your instructions aren't set in stone. Tweak them as you notice behaviors you want to change.
